Woven Karanday Basket 10

$25.00 Regular price $54.00
Only 1 left in stock

This basket is made by the Yshir Indigenous Community in Paraguay, South America. Artisans weave Karanday leaves by hand, a process that takes 3-5 days for each basket to be completed. Karanday (Wax tree) is a South American species of palm tree found in humid regions of Paraguay. The brown details in these baskets are made of Guembepi leaves, another species of plant found in the Paraguayan forest.

Male members of the community often walk 4-5 miles to collect the leaves from the forest, while the main activity of the women consists of weaving the baskets outdoors under the trees where they find shelter from the high temperatures, women are also responsible for the sale of crafts in local markets or by crossing the border to Brazil by boat.

The Yshir Community is found in different parts of the country. Its point of origin is the city of Bahía Negra, in Alto Paraguay

These baskets are an excellent option to hold fruits and vegetables on the kitchen counter, towels, to be hung on the wall, or to be displayed as a decorative element around the house.
